Plum Waves, 2022

Gouache on Fabriano paper, framed in Walnut stained Tasmanian Oak

48 x 66cm

$990

This series is a contemplation of the heavens and the idea of infinity. It's the artist's meditation upon ancestry and culture, an attempt to reconcile with late family members who exist both in the heavens and here on earth in memory. In Islamic art, the use of repetition and pattern represent divine nature. The cosmos is born of mathematics, and life is created from the building blocks of geometry that govern the nature of the universe. The process of painting these waves, long hours spent tracing arcs, a repeated motion, is meditative, allowing stillness of the mind and inviting spiritual contemplation. The use of reds, lilacs and pinks in these warmer-toned four artworks are an homage to the artist's home in Iran: Shiraz. A desert oasis, Shiraz sits cradled in a ring of red mountains. Hues from desert sunsets and the red morning light on the mountains are reflected in the waves as they would be in the garden streams throughout the city. As day breaks, and again as the sun sets, the azaan rings out from mosques around the city, inviting prayer and contemplation. These colours place the viewer in the gardens during the call to prayer, calling for reflection.
