This series is a contemplation of the heavens and the idea of infinity. It's the artist's meditation upon ancestry and culture, an attempt to reconcile with late family members who exist both in the heavens and here on earth in memory. In Islamic art, the use of repetition and pattern represent divine nature. The cosmos is born of mathematics, and life is created from the building blocks of geometry that govern the nature of the universe. The process of painting these waves, long hours spent tracing arcs, a repeated motion, is meditative, allowing stillness of the mind and inviting spiritual contemplation. The use of turquoises, greens and blues in these cooler-toned four pieces calls upon traditional Persian architectural techniques. The precious stone is frequently placed in delicate ceiling mosaics in mosques, shrines and tombs to bring the heavens into the home, again calling upon the idea of liminality - calling unto the heavens and existing between the physical and spiritual realms.
